By Zoila Palma: France recorded at least 817 excess deaths between July 27 and August 20 during a period of exceptionally high temperatures, according to the country’s national health agency on Wednesday.
The latest figure brings the estimated number of excess deaths recorded since June and the beginning of a series of heatwaves to nearly 8,000.
The estimate includes deaths from all causes based on death certificates issued during the affected periods, Reuters report.
People aged 75 and older accounted for the majority of the excess mortality, highlighting the particular vulnerability of older people during periods of extreme heat. The health agency had previously reported 5,764 excess deaths between June 17 and July 2, followed by another 1,243 deaths between July 3 and July 20.
The heatwaves come amid increasingly extreme temperatures across Europe, which meteorologists have linked to human-induced climate change.
