By Zoila Palma:  Two U.S. Embassy staff members and two Mexican law enforcement officials were killed in a traffic accident in the mountainous region of Chihuahua following an operation targeting clandestine drug laboratories, authorities confirmed.

According to the state attorney general’s office, the victims were returning from a joint U.S.-Mexico anti-narcotics training exercise when the crash occurred on Sunday, April 19, near the town of Morelos.

The U.S. personnel, described as “instructors,” had participated in coordinated efforts with state police prior to the incident, USA Today reports.

Mexican officials identified two of the deceased as Pedro Román Oseguera Cervantes, director of the Chihuahua State Investigations Agency, and police officer Manuel Genaro Méndez Montes. The identities of the U.S. Embassy staff members have not been publicly disclosed.

The fatal accident occurred a day after state investigators, alongside the Mexican military, dismantled large clandestine methamphetamine laboratories in the mountainous forests between Guachochi and Morelos.

Authorities said the drug operation, described as a “narcolab,” was extensive, comprising five sections equipped with more than a dozen ovens, numerous gas cylinders, and makeshift campgrounds for workers.

In a statement, U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson extended condolences, calling the incident “a solemn reminder of the risks” faced by law enforcement personnel on both sides of the border.
