International News: Former Honduran President sentenced to 45 years for collaborating with drug traffickers

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Wednesday, June 26, 2024, former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández was sentenced to 45 years in a U.S. prison and fined $8 million in New York for collaborating with drug traffickers over many years to facilitate the transport of more than 400 tons of cocaine to the United States.

The judge, P. Kevin Castel, emphasized that the sentence should serve as a warning to powerful individuals who believe their status protects them from accountability.

Despite maintaining his innocence throughout the trial and sentencing, Hernández portrayed himself as an anti-drug crusader who cooperated with U.S. authorities.

However, the judge found that evidence presented during the trial demonstrated Hernández’s active involvement in protecting drug traffickers, using his position and the nation’s resources to benefit them.

The sentencing marks a significant moment in Honduras and the United States’ efforts against drug trafficking, with U.S. Ambassador Laura Dogu highlighting its social impact.

Hernández’s wife, Ana García, criticized the verdict as unjust and vowed to appeal, viewing it as part of a series of injustices against her husband.

The trial highlighted Hernández’s ties to notorious drug dealers, including Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, and implicated his brother in similar drug-related offenses.

The judge underscored the substantial evidence of Hernández’s guilt and the devastating toll of drug-related violence during his political tenure.

The judge also described the number of killings linked to the drug trade during Hernández’s political career as “staggering,” saying one drug trafficking witness admitted at the trial that he aided 56 killings and another said he was involved in 78 murders before he began cooperating with U.S. authorities.
