By Zoila Palma: Former Colombian President Gustavo Petro met with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Wednesday during his visit to Mexico, where the two discussed what Petro described as a “new political reality” emerging across the Americas.
Petro raised concerns about potential interference by the United States in electoral processes across Latin America. He said Mexico should pay close attention to political developments in countries including Brazil, as well as the growing influence of right-wing political forces ahead of Mexico’s 2027 midterm elections and 2030 presidential election.
Following the meeting at Mexico’s National Palace, Petro said discussions focused on what he called an “artificial political reality” linked to operations originating outside the countries where elections are held.
He said investigations in Bolivia had revealed what he described as a broader phenomenon affecting countries throughout the Americas.
Petro, who has been in Mexico since Monday, is also scheduled to deliver a keynote lecture at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
