By Zoila Palma:  At least 47 people have been killed and dozens more are missing after heavy rains triggered massive flooding and landslides across Mexico, officials said Sunday.

The heavy downpours, which began earlier in the week, devastated several states, sweeping away vehicles, damaging homes, and destroying infrastructure, AP reports.

President Claudia Sheinbaum visited some of the hardest-hit areas and announced a government census to identify affected families and distribute emergency aid.

Civil Protection authorities said 18 people were killed in Veracruz, 16 in Hidalgo, and 12 in Puebla, with more fatalities reported elsewhere as rescue teams continued searching for survivors.

Officials attributed the deadly weather to two tropical systems—Hurricane Priscilla and Tropical Storm Raymond—that formed off Mexico’s Pacific coast before dissipating.

In the worst-hit states, hundreds of army personnel, police, and firefighters were deployed to rescue trapped residents and provide shelter, food, and medical care.

Thousands of people remain without water and electricity as cleanup efforts continue.

Civil Protection said at least 38 people were still missing across three states, with some villages cut off entirely by floods and landslides.

During her visit to Veracruz on Sunday, President Sheinbaum said air operations had been established to deliver aid to isolated communities.
