By Zoila Palma: Dozens of flights have been cancelled to major Mexican airports after cartel-related violence triggered widespread disruption, severely impacting air travel in the western state of Jalisco.
Airports in Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara were among the hardest hit, with arrival and departure boards cleared and no aircraft able to land or take off at the height of the chaos, Aerospace global reports.
Major US carriers, including United Airlines, American Airlines, and Delta Air Lines, cancelled services into the region, alongside Mexican airlines such as Aeromexico and Volaris.
Canadian carriers including WestJet and Air Canada, as well as smaller operators such as Air Transat and Flair Airlines, were also affected.
On Sunday, many inbound flights were diverted to airports in the southern United States, with widespread cancellations continuing into Monday morning.
Mexican authorities maintained that the airports remained open despite the disruption.
Mexico’s Federal Civil Aviation Agency said that following incidents “in the vicinity of the airports of Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta and Tepic,” some international flights bound for Puerto Vallarta were diverted in line with airline protocols.
The agency insisted that operations continued normally and that coordination with security authorities was in place.
Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico, which operates the Puerto Vallarta airport, said the facility was under the protection of the National Guard and the Ministry of National Defence.
The unrest followed the capture and death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho,” leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
