By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Severe flash floods in Spain have resulted in at least 95 deaths, marking one of the country’s worst natural disasters in recent memory.
Torrential rainstorms from Tuesday to Wednesday led to devastating flooding across southern and eastern regions, including Malaga and Valencia, turning streets into raging rivers, the Associated Press reports.
Emergency services confirmed the majority of fatalities in Valencia, with additional casualties in Castilla La Mancha and Andalusia.
Rescue operations involved over 1,100 soldiers and helicopters, as residents sought safety from rapidly rising waters. In the town of Paiporta, more than 30 people died, including six from a senior care home.
Spain’s national weather service noted that the rainfall in Valencia over eight hours exceeded totals from the previous 20 months.
As floodwaters receded, streets were left covered in mud and debris, making many areas unrecognizable.
Transportation was severely disrupted, with a high-speed train derailment near Malaga and numerous flight cancellations.
Valencia’s regional president urged residents to stay home due to hazardous travel conditions.
The floods, linked to climate change and compounded by a recent drought, are a stark reminder of the increasing severity of weather events in the region.
Rescue efforts continue as search teams look for missing individuals, and the death toll may rise further.
