By Zoila Palma: A shooting involving multiple suspects left five people wounded at Virginia State University early this morning, prompting a campus lockdown and a police investigation just days before the start of the new academic year.
Campus police and Chesterfield County officers responded to the area near the university’s Quad Annexes shortly before 1:30 a.m., where they found five people suffering from gunshot wounds outside campus dormitories.
The five victims were transported to hospitals for treatment, AP reports.
Police said one person who was initially reported to have life-threatening injuries was later upgraded to critical condition, while the other four sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The university said the shooting involved “multiple suspects” and urged people to avoid the immediate area as authorities investigated.
The campus lockdown remained in effect for several hours before being lifted at approximately 9 a.m. Saturday. Following the lockdown, the university said a significant law enforcement presence remained on campus as investigators continued working to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
