By Zoila Palma: A commercial passenger flight from the United States landed in Venezuela today for the first time in nearly seven years, marking a significant step in the gradual restoration of economic and diplomatic ties between the two countries.
The American Airlines flight departed Miami in the morning and arrived at Simón Bolívar International Airport near Caracas just under three hours later, CNN reports.
The airline has resumed daily service using an Embraer 175 aircraft, becoming the first U.S. carrier to reestablish regular flights to Venezuela since operations were suspended in 2019.
The launch of the route was met with visible enthusiasm at both departure and arrival points. At Miami International Airport, the inaugural flight featured a celebratory atmosphere with music, food, and national colors, while a similar reception greeted passengers in Caracas. Onboard, most seats were occupied by journalists and officials due to operational weight limits.
Passengers welcomed the renewed connection, citing improved travel efficiency. One traveler described the direct flight as “a big opportunity for the country,” noting that previous journeys required lengthy layovers that could extend travel time to an entire day.
The resumption of flights follows the recent lifting of a U.S. ban on air travel to Venezuela, after authorities determined that safety conditions had improved.
