By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Monday, fires at ballot drop boxes destroyed ballots in Portland, Oregon, and another in Vancouver, Washington.
According to the Associated Press, the Portland fire was quickly contained, damaging only three ballots, thanks to a fire suppression system and nearby security.
However, the Vancouver drop box was not as fortunate; it failed to contain the flames, leading to significant ballot destruction.
Greg Kimsey, Clark County’s auditor, described the incident as a “direct attack on democracy” and urged voters who dropped ballots after 11 a.m. on Saturday to seek replacements.
In response, officials plan to increase ballot collection frequency and hire staff for 24-hour monitoring of drop boxes until the election.
Both states have a history of using ballot drop boxes, but they have faced scrutiny and conspiracy theories.
While six states have banned them since 2020, Washington and Oregon continue to utilize these systems.
Police linked the Monday fires to a previous incident on October 8 in Vancouver and captured surveillance footage of a Volvo near the Portland drop box just before the fire was discovered.
Candidates from both parties condemned the fires.
