By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Firefighters in western Canada are battling a large wildfire approaching the remote town of Fort Nelson amid dry conditions and strong winds.
The blaze, spanning 10,000 hectares, poses a significant threat as smoke spreads across multiple provinces and parts of the northern U.S.
Bowinn Ma, British Columbia’s minister of emergency management, highlighted the challenging conditions, expressing extreme concern due to the lack of precipitation and unpredictable winds.
The fire, which ignited on Friday, has expanded to over 5,280 hectares and is now 2.5 kilometers from Fort Nelson.
Canada, following a warm winter with minimal snowfall, faces heightened wildfire risks in forests and wildlands due to drought conditions.
Despite the wildfires, there have been no disruptions reported in the energy sector.
In Alberta, where a fire near Fort McMurray sparked evacuation alerts, favorable weather conditions and light rain showers have aided firefighting efforts.
The federal government predicts another severe wildfire season due to above-normal temperatures, exacerbated by El Nino weather patterns.
