By Zoila Palma:  FIFA and the United Nations have strongly condemned the racist abuse directed at France captain Kylian Mbappé following his team’s 1-0 victory over Paraguay in the FIFA World Cup.

The controversy erupted after Mbappé scored the match-winning penalty before becoming the target of offensive remarks from Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla.

The heated Round of 16 clash was marked by physical confrontations on the pitch, but the aftermath has been dominated by condemnation of racism.

In a statement, the United Nations described Amarilla’s comments as “despicable” and said they reflected a broader pattern of racism in football and sports. The organization stressed that public officials have a greater responsibility to reject racism, discrimination, and hate speech, while urging governments, sports organizations, and social media platforms to take stronger action to prevent and address racist abuse and ensure effective accountability.

FIFA also denounced the abuse through its Players’ Voice Panel, saying it was “deeply disturbed” by the treatment of the French star.

The organization declared that racism is “an attack on human dignity” and has no place in football, the FIFA World Cup, or society. FIFA Players’ Voice Panel Honorary Captain and football legend George Weah expressed solidarity with Mbappé, stating that football must remain a sport built on respect, inclusion, and unity and emphasizing that there should be zero tolerance for discrimination.

The backlash followed Amarilla’s remarks after Mbappé declined to shake the hand of Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill at the end of the match.

The senator responded with a series of racist insults and later accused the French forward of “gender-based violence.”

Despite the controversy, Mbappé and France have shifted their focus to the World Cup quarterfinals, where they are scheduled to face Morocco in Boston on Thursday, July 9.
