By Zoila Palma: FIFA has begun reviewing match reports after Argentina players displayed a banner supporting their country’s claim over the Falkland Islands following their World Cup semi-final victory against England.
The defending champions secured a dramatic 2-1 comeback win in Atlanta to advance to Sunday’s final against Spain, but celebrations afterward sparked a political controversy, BBC reports.
After the final whistle, Argentine players held a banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (“The Falklands are Argentine”), referring to the long-running sovereignty dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands, a British overseas territory in the South Atlantic.
FIFA said its independent disciplinary committee is assessing the reports and circumstances before deciding whether further action is necessary under its disciplinary code.
The incident has drawn criticism from UK officials, with Downing Street backing calls for FIFA to investigate. The Falkland Islands government said it was disappointed by the display and urged FIFA to sanction such actions in line with its rules, while stressing that politics should not be brought into sport.
Argentina’s President Javier Milei defended the players’ expression, calling it understandable and valid, but said the issue should be addressed through diplomacy rather than football.
