By Zoila Palma: FIFA has reportedly rejected Iran’s request to move its World Cup matches out of the United States amid ongoing tensions linked to the recent Middle East conflict, Yahoo reports.
Today, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that the global football governing body would not relocate the fixtures to Mexico despite security concerns raised by Iran.
Iran had asked to avoid playing its three group-stage matches in the US following hostilities that erupted on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iranian targets. Although a fragile ceasefire has recently taken hold, Washington has warned that military action could resume, heightening concerns for the safety of the Iranian team.
Sheinbaum explained that FIFA determined moving the matches would involve “an enormous logistical effort,” ultimately deciding to keep all games at their originally scheduled venues. The tournament, set to run from June 11 to July 19, will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, with Iran scheduled to face Belgium, New Zealand, and Egypt.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has consistently supported Iran’s participation in the tournament despite strained relations between Tehran and Washington. In a recent interview, Infantino emphasized that there was no alternative plan, stating that Iran would compete as scheduled in what he described as “plan A.”
Meanwhile, Iranian football federation president Mehdi Taj indicated that the national team intends to boycott playing in the United States, though not the World Cup itself. He did not provide further clarification, according to reports from state media.
Adding to the uncertainty, US President Donald Trump suggested it may not be “appropriate” for Iran to participate, citing safety concerns.
The developments come as diplomatic efforts resume following the ceasefire announced earlier this week.
Talks between US and Iranian officials are set to begin in Islamabad, Pakistan, aiming to establish a more lasting peace.
