By Zoila Palma: FIFA appears to have ruled out moving Iran’s World Cup matches from the United States to Mexico, despite concerns over player safety amid escalating tensions between the US and Iran.
According to BBC, the decision maintains the original match schedule for the tournament, which will take place from 11 June to 19 July, co-hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico.
Iran had explored relocating its fixtures after US President Donald Trump questioned the safety of the team competing on American soil.
Mehdi Taj, president of Iran’s football federation, said the federation was negotiating with FIFA to move matches to Mexico but emphasized that the team would not travel to the US if security could not be guaranteed.
The Iranian national team is set to face New Zealand on 16 June and Belgium on 21 June in Los Angeles, and Egypt on 27 June in Seattle.
FIFA confirmed that it remains in regular contact with all participating teams, including Iran, and is “looking forward to all participating teams competing as per the match schedule announced on 6 December 2025.”
Iran has qualified for a fourth consecutive World Cup and had previously decided against withdrawing from the competition following US airstrikes on nuclear facilities last year.
Officials emphasized that FIFA, not any individual host country, organizes the tournament and bears responsibility for ensuring the security of participating teams.
