International News: FBI announces that it removed Chinese-sponsored malware from thousands of U.S. computers

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On January 14, 2025, the FBI announced that it removed Chinese-sponsored malware from thousands of U.S. computers, UPI reports.

The malware, known as PlugX, was controlled by the Mustang Panda hacker group, linked to the Chinese government. This malware, which spreads via USB ports, allows hackers to steal files and data from infected systems.

The FBI’s investigation, ongoing since 2014, revealed that Mustang Panda targeted government, private organizations, and international groups, including those in the U.S., Europe, and Taiwan.

Working with French authorities, the FBI deleted the malware from 4,258 U.S. computers by executing warrants starting in August 2024.

The operation involved deleting PlugX files and registry keys to halt its spread.

Assistant Attorney General Matthew Olsen praised the international collaboration in combating cyber threats.
