International News: Faith Leaders push back against Trump’s Church arrest policy

By Zoila Palma: Clergy members across Southern California and beyond are vowing to support immigrants, despite the Trump administration’s recent policy allowing immigration agents to make arrests in places of worship, LA Times report.

The policy, which rescinds a 2011 restriction on arrests in sensitive locations like churches, has sparked backlash from faith leaders who are committed to protecting immigrants.

Guillermo Torres of Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice in Los Angeles said, “We have an executive order from God, not from politicians,” emphasizing their commitment to aiding immigrants. In response to the policy change, churches are organizing “know your rights” training, creating sanctuary spaces, and preparing rapid-response teams.

Some churches, like Rev. Carlos Ramirez’s in East LA, are ready to shelter immigrants in need.

The policy change has also led to legal challenges.

A group of Quaker congregations has sued the Department of Homeland Security, arguing the new rule harms religious freedom.

Despite the fear of mass deportations, many clergy members remain steadfast, viewing their efforts as a continuation of a long tradition of sanctuary for those seeking protection.
