By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On September 17 and 18, electronic pagers used by Hezbollah members exploded across Lebanon, killing at least nine people and injuring around 2,800.
The unusual attack raised concerns about escalating tensions between Israel and Hezbollah.
According to NPR, Lebanese officials and Hezbollah blamed Israel for the explosions, claiming responsibility for what they called a “criminal aggression.”
Israel did not comment.
The blasts primarily affected the southern suburbs of Beirut, Hezbollah’s stronghold, and overwhelmed local hospitals. The Lebanese Ministry of Public Health declared a medical emergency as many victims suffered serious injuries.
Hezbollah had recently adopted pagers for communication, believing them to be more secure than phones.
Following the explosions, health officials warned citizens to avoid wireless devices, and Hezbollah advised members to discard their new pagers.
The blasts came amid ongoing tensions following the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel, with both Hezbollah and Israel exchanging fire along the border.
