International News: ‘Everything is on the table’: Ontario Premier warns Trump of tough Canadian retaliation

By Zoila Palma:  Ontario Premier Doug Ford is warning that Canada should be prepared to use electricity and critical minerals as leverage against the United States as tensions over tariffs intensify.

In an interview with the AP, Ford said President Donald Trump has underestimated Canadians’ willingness to endure economic hardship rather than give in to U.S. pressure, declaring, “He underestimates Canada. We’re all in.”

Ford accused Trump of declaring an economic war against Canada and invoked former U.S. President Ronald Reagan, who was known for opposing protectionist trade policies.

“He should maybe take that picture off the wall and move it somewhere else. Because right now, Ronald Reagan would be disgusted with President Trump,” Ford said.

His comments came after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney ended trade negotiations with Washington, saying the U.S. had demanded too much in exchange for tariff relief.

The Ontario premier warned that Canada could respond with increasingly aggressive measures if the trade dispute continues, including restricting exports of critical minerals and electricity to the United States.

“Everything’s on the table. I’ll do whatever it takes,” Ford said, noting that Ontario supplies electricity to approximately 1.5 million homes and businesses in the U.S.

He also suggested Canada could consider using oil and potash as additional leverage, while specifically highlighting Ontario’s supplies of high-grade nickel and uranium.
