By Zoila Palma: A high-level meeting between EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio was unexpectedly canceled Wednesday due to “scheduling issues,” escalating tensions between the U.S. and Europe.
The pair had last met at the Munich Security Conference just weeks ago, AP reports.
While both sides cited scheduling conflicts, European officials were caught off guard, as Kallas had recently previewed the talks.
Tensions between the U.S. and Europe have risen over issues like trade tariffs and differing stances on Ukraine.
U.S. officials have also pushed Europe to take more responsibility for its security.
The cancellation follows a memo from the U.S. State Department, urging diplomats to raise concerns over free speech and migration with European counterparts.
Kallas, despite the canceled meeting, will continue her trip to Washington, where she is set to meet with U.S. senators and discuss EU-U.S. relations.
