By Zoila Palma: European leaders gathered in Brussels on Thursday to discuss increased defense spending and reaffirm their support for Ukraine amid shifting U.S. policies.
In a unanimous move, 26 EU leaders signed a statement backing Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence, though Hungary abstained, CNN reports.
The EU also greenlit proposals aimed at facilitating billions in defense spending across member states, including a plan for loans up to €150 billion to bolster national defense.
During the summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked the EU for its continued support, particularly as his relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump deteriorated. French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed the EU’s commitment to providing Ukraine with over $33 billion in aid, funded by frozen Russian assets.
Despite Europe’s growing commitment, some EU countries, notably Hungary, remain less supportive of Ukraine’s military needs. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has consistently resisted calls for military aid to Kyiv and expressed backing for Trump’s stance.
As discussions on a potential peace plan continue, Europe faces challenges in sharing the financial burden of supporting Ukraine. Leaders also discussed the possibility of deploying a peacekeeping force to uphold a ceasefire, with countries like the UK, France, and Turkey likely to contribute.
The summit marks a critical step for Europe’s defense strategy amid ongoing Russian aggression and uncertainty over U.S. involvement in Ukraine’s future.
