By Zoila Palma: Europe is stepping up efforts to become a global leader in robotics as it races to compete with the United States and China.
AI-powered robots took center stage at the European Parliament in Brussels this week, where researchers and technology companies showcased machines capable of performing household, industrial and logistics tasks.
Among the demonstrations were four human-assistance robots developed by European research institutions, including France’s INRIA and the German Aerospace Centre.
The robots worked together to clear a breakfast table, placing drinks in a refrigerator, disposing of packaging, wiping surfaces and loading a dishwasher.
Although their movements were slow, researchers said the machines are deliberately designed to prioritize precision and safely operate around people, AFP reports.
Other demonstrations highlighted Europe’s advances in industrial and mobile robotics.
A robotic arm developed by France’s CEA dismantled an electric battery model for recycling, while Italy’s Institute of Technology showcased its four-legged KYON robot delivering a parcel. ETH Zurich’s “Transformer” robot also demonstrated its ability to shift between four-legged and two-legged configurations and navigate stairs.
Experts say Europe has strong research capabilities but needs greater investment and political support to turn its innovations into globally competitive companies.
