By Zoila Palma: England and Argentina will renew one of football’s fiercest rivalries on Wednesday when they meet in the second semifinal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. The winner will advance to Sunday’s final to face either France or Spain in the battle for the world championship.
The two nations have a long history of dramatic World Cup encounters, including Diego Maradona’s infamous “Hand of God” goal in 1986 and David Beckham’s red card against Argentina in 1998.
Wednesday’s clash will be their sixth meeting at the World Cup, with England holding a slight edge after winning three of the previous five encounters. Their last World Cup meeting came in 2002, when England secured a 1-0 victory through Beckham’s penalty.
Defending champions Argentina will be led by Lionel Messi, who is enjoying another remarkable tournament with eight goals and has extended his record as the World Cup’s all-time leading scorer with 21 goals. Lautaro Martínez, Lisandro Martínez and Enzo Fernández have also played key roles in Argentina’s run.
England, meanwhile, will rely on captain Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham, who have each scored six goals, while Bukayo Saka and Anthony Gordon have each contributed three assists.
