By Zoila Palma: Mexico’s FIFA World Cup journey came to an emotional end following its Round of 16 defeat to England last night, closing the curtain on what many consider one of the tournament’s most memorable stories.
Despite the loss, Mexico earned widespread praise for its spirited performances, passionate supporters, and the electric atmosphere created throughout the competition, particularly at the iconic Azteca Stadium.
Under head coach Javier Aguirre, Mexico exceeded expectations with a squad built largely around domestic-based players. The veteran manager, in his third spell in charge of the national team, guided his side on an inspiring run that united the country and won admiration around the football world.
Following the final whistle, an emotional Aguirre said the team had hoped to give supporters “one more night of joy” before their tournament came to an end.
Mexico City also emerged as one of the defining backdrops of the World Cup, with fans transforming the capital into a nonstop celebration of football.
Streets filled with green jerseys, murals honoring football stars, and thousands of supporters created an unforgettable festival atmosphere, while the Azteca Stadium once again proved why it remains one of the sport’s most iconic venues.
Although Mexico hosted only 13 matches during the expanded tournament, its contribution left a lasting impression on players and fans alike.
