By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: In less than 5 years, President Nayib Bukele has transformed his country, El Salvador from being known for its record on murder and gangs to a country with one of the lowest homicide rates in the Americas.
Salvadorans go to the polls on Sunday and Bukele is certain to be re-elected in the Presidential elections.
Polls show that the majority of Salvadorans support Bukele’s crackdown on gang measures, Reuters report.
Residents described the freedom they can now enjoy without being threatened or attacked by gangs.
Meanwhile, rights groups continue to denounce the arbitrary arrests of innocent people, torture, and deaths of prisoners in custody.
A January 2024 opinion poll from the University of Central America’s public opinion institute showed 82% of voters supporting Bukele.
The transformation and re-birth of El Salvador has been recognized worldwide and the country recently hosted the prestigious Miss Universe pageant as well as the Inter Miami vs El Salvador Pre season game hosting world renowned star Leo Messi among others.
