By Zoila Palma: El Salvador’s Supreme Court will review a habeas corpus lawsuit filed by a law firm on behalf of 30 Venezuelan citizens jailed in the country’s mega-prison after being deported from the United States.
The deportations came after the U.S. accused the detainees of being part of the Tren de Aragua gang, Reuters report.
The lawsuit challenges the legality of their detention and demands their immediate release, or, failing that, their orderly repatriation in line with immigration laws. Lawyer Jaime Ortega, representing the detainees, said they were also seeking habeas corpus for other Venezuelans held in the country.
The deportations were carried out under a U.S. wartime law targeting “alien enemies,” but were blocked by a U.S. judge, who later ruled that the detainees must be allowed to challenge the gang membership claims. Some detainees are facing poor prison conditions, including overcrowding, beatings, and limited access to food and water.
El Salvador’s government, which has received $6 million from the U.S. to house these prisoners, has not commented on the conditions in the facility. The prison, located 70 km from the capital, San Salvador, is touted as the largest in Latin America.
The case comes amid the U.S.’s broader policy of mass deportations to Latin American countries.
