By Zoila Palma: A contingent of 70 Salvadoran soldiers arrived in Haiti on Tuesday to support a U.N.-backed mission aimed at fighting rampant gang violence, AP reports.

The soldiers will provide air support, critical for medical evacuations, as part of a broader effort led by Kenyan police.

The Salvadoran troops join over 600 Kenyan officers, along with personnel from Jamaica, Guatemala, and other nations, as part of the mission to combat gangs responsible for thousands of deaths and widespread violence, particularly in Port-au-Prince.

Despite international support, the mission faces funding and personnel shortages, with the U.S. and others calling for its transformation into a full U.N. peacekeeping force.

Last year, more than 5,600 people were killed in Haiti due to gang violence, and over 1 million have been displaced.
