By Zoila Palma: Hurricane forecasters are monitoring two new areas of potential tropical development in the Pacific as Hawaii continues to recover from the historic rainfall brought by Tropical Storm Lala.
Meteorologists are warning that conditions could support additional storm formation in the coming days, with powerful El Niño conditions contributing to increased tropical activity.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said a broad area of low pressure could develop southeast of the Hawaiian Islands later this week, with conditions potentially becoming favorable for a tropical depression to form by late week or over the weekend.
The system currently has a 60% chance of developing over the next seven days, while some forecast models suggest it could remain southwest of the islands.
A second disturbance farther east in the Pacific has an 80% chance of developing over the next seven days, according to the hurricane center. If it becomes a named storm, it would be the ninth of the Eastern Pacific season, with Iselle and Julio next on the rotating list of storm names.
The potential developments come as Hawaii assesses the impact of Lala, which produced extraordinary rainfall across the islands.
