By Zoila Palma: Convicted drug trafficker Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán has formally requested extradition from the United States to Mexico, asking to face pending charges in his home country while continuing to challenge the conditions of his imprisonment.
Guzmán, the former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, is currently serving a life sentence imposed in 2019 and is held at the high-security ADX Florence facility, El Pais reports.
In a handwritten letter dated April 23 and received May 1 by the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York, Guzmán appealed to Judge Brian Cogan for what he described as “equal treatment under the law.” He argued that his case involved violations of due process and requested to be transferred to Mexico to stand trial on outstanding charges. The letter, written in English with grammatical errors, reiterated claims he has made in previous correspondence to the court.
Guzmán has repeatedly raised concerns about his legal treatment and prison conditions. In an earlier letter sent weeks before, he called for protection of his constitutional rights, asserting that he is entitled to equal protection under U.S. law. His legal team has also spoken publicly about his situation, with attorney Mariel Colón stating earlier this year that he has experienced weight loss and episodes of tachycardia, describing his confinement as harsh and inhumane.
The former cartel leader has been held under Special Administrative Measures, a restrictive regime involving extreme isolation.
