By Zoila Palma: A senior figure in Ecuador’s drug-trafficking network, Ángel Esteban Aguilar Morales, also known as “Lobo Menor,” has been arrested in Mexico City, authorities confirmed.
Aguilar is wanted in connection with the 2023 murder of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio, BBC reports.
Ecuador’s Interior Minister John Reimberg said the suspect had been living under a false Colombian identity at the time of his capture.
Mexico’s Security Minister Omar García Harfuch stated that Aguilar, a member of the Los Lobos cartel, was the subject of an Interpol red notice and is linked to multiple crimes, including drug trafficking, extortion, and homicide.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro described him as one of the world’s most notorious assassins, emphasizing the significance of the arrest.
Officials highlighted the operation as a result of coordinated efforts between Ecuador, Colombia, and Mexico, marking a major step in combating transnational organized crime.
Aguilar had reportedly been tracked for two months across Colombian cities before his arrest. At the time, he was using the alias Juan Carlos Montero Mestre.
Villavicencio, a former journalist and anti-corruption campaigner, was shot dead in August 2023 after leaving a rally in Quito.
