By Zoila Palma: Colombian police announced Friday that they had seized 14 tons of cocaine at the Pacific port of Buenaventura, marking the country’s biggest drug bust in ten years.
A trained canine team detected the cocaine, which had been hidden in dozens of large sacks and camouflaged with plaster inside a warehouse, CBS reports.
Officials said the seizure prevented an estimated 35 million doses—worth more than $388 million—from reaching international markets.
The operation comes amid heightened tensions between Bogotá and Washington, with the White House recently imposing financial sanctions on President Gustavo Petro and removing Colombia from its list of key anti-drug allies.
Petro, who noted the operation was conducted “without a single death,” has sharply criticized U.S. President Donald Trump’s authorization of airstrikes on suspected drug boats, arguing they amount to extrajudicial killings and have harmed innocent civilians—claims Washington denies.
Despite political friction, Colombia continues to record major interdictions.
Earlier this week, navy divers discovered more than 450 pounds of cocaine hidden beneath a ship heading for Europe, just days after authorities intercepted over seven tons of drugs from speedboats and a semi-submersible vessel in the Pacific.
