By Zoila Palma: The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has formally requested 20,000 National Guard troops from the Pentagon to support the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement, a DHS official confirmed Thursday.
The troops would assist in deportation efforts, though their exact role remains unclear, The Hill reports.
The Pentagon said the request is in early planning stages and under legal review, including concerns about using military forces for interior immigration enforcement.
This would mark the first time National Guard members nationwide are asked to assist with mass deportations. Previously, such involvement has been limited to border support and logistics.
Democratic lawmakers quickly criticized the move, with Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) calling it a dangerous misuse of the military and warning it could undermine national security and military readiness.
The request follows Trump’s directive last week to boost deportation efforts and a recent move to designate parts of the southern border as “National Defense Areas” under military control.
