By Zoila Palma: The death toll from a ferry disaster off the coast of Guyana has risen to 53, with hopes fading of finding more survivors after the passenger vessel capsized Saturday night.
Prime Minister Mark Phillips said that by Tuesday night, 76 people had been rescued alive, while dozens remained missing.
Officials said 179 people were believed to have been aboard the ferry, significantly more than the 133 passengers and crew listed on its manifest.
Authorities have launched an investigation into what caused the 87-year-old vessel, the MV Barima, to overturn, BBC reports.
The ferry had departed Georgetown on Saturday afternoon for Port Kaituma in northern Guyana.
The captain and another crew member were taken into custody after testing positive for cannabis, prompting officials to warn that anyone found responsible for negligence, misconduct or criminal wrongdoing would face the full force of the law.
