Tracking casualties has been made especially difficult after the Iranian government shut down internet access nationwide, AP reports.
Despite the communications blackout, some information has emerged through activist networks and videos that have filtered out of the country.
The Associated Press noted that it has been relying on figures provided by the Human Rights Activists News Agency, a U.S.-based organization that has documented demonstrations in Iran for the past 20 years.
The group verifies reported deaths through a network of contacts inside Iran, including medical officials, family members, and community leaders, and cross-checks them against funeral notices and official records.
The agency, co-founded by Iranian activist Keyvan Rafiee, has maintained a record of accuracy despite the challenges of reporting under government restrictions.
State media in Iran has offered little coverage of the demonstrations, leaving much of the country’s situation unclear.
Videos circulating online, often transmitted via satellite connections like Starlink, provide brief glimpses of protest scenes and gunfire.
