International News: Death toll climbs to 5 after blast outside police station in Michoacán

By Zoila Palma: Police in Mexico’s western state of Michoacán confirmed Sunday that the death toll from a powerful explosion outside a police station in the town of Coahuayana has risen to five.

Twelve others were injured in Saturday’s midday blast, which occurred in a region long plagued by violent clashes between rival criminal groups, ABC reports.

State prosecutors said the explosion came from a pickup truck parked outside the station, with the remains of two victims found at the scene, including the truck’s driver.

The attack struck an area where Mexico’s federal government has recently intensified security operations amid escalating cartel violence.

Three of those killed and five of those injured belonged to a local community police force that originated more than a decade ago during citizen-led efforts to push back against organized crime. Though later formalized by the state, some of these forces have since been infiltrated by criminal elements. Community police commander Héctor Zepeda said the blast was so forceful that human remains were scattered across the surrounding area.

Explosives have become an increasingly common weapon in Michoacán, deployed by criminal groups through drones, roadside devices and underground mines. However, the use of car bombs remains relatively rare, underscoring the severity of Saturday’s attack.

The explosion unfolded as state Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla attended an event in Mexico City alongside President Claudia Sheinbaum marking seven years of Morena party rule, highlighting the persistent security challenges facing the administration.

For more than two decades, Michoacán has been a battleground for cartels seeking control of drug-trafficking routes and the chemical precursors used to manufacture synthetic narcotics.
