By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: High winds are set to return to Los Angeles on Monday, complicating efforts to contain two massive wildfires that have destroyed neighborhoods and killed at least 24 people.
The National Weather Service has issued a “red flag” warning, predicting winds of 50 to 70 mph (80 to 112 kph) through Wednesday.
Firefighters have managed to hold back the blazes overnight, but officials warn that the conditions could worsen.
More than 8,500 personnel are battling the Palisades and Eaton fires, which are the largest in the area, with containment at 14% and 33%, respectively, Reuters report.
Authorities reported more than 12,000 structures damaged, and the death toll is expected to rise as search teams recover remains from the fire’s aftermath. Meanwhile, the state’s fire crews, supported by personnel from other states and countries, are preparing for the return of extreme winds.
In addition to the devastation, officials urge residents to wear N95 masks due to hazardous air quality.
Over 92,000 people remain under evacuation orders, with thousands more warned to leave as the fires spread.
President Biden expressed his support for the firefighting efforts, and federal aid is being coordinated for those affected.
Meanwhile, the Rose Bowl stadium in Pasadena has been turned into a base for firefighting operations as crews work to protect the region from further destruction.
