International News: Cuba says US sanctions undermine efforts to attract private investment

By Zoila Palma:  Cuba has accused the United States of undermining its efforts to open the economy to private investment by continuing to impose sanctions on Cuban companies and officials.

Cuban U.N. Ambassador Ernesto Soberón Guzmán questioned why Washington continues to increase economic pressure while simultaneously calling for greater private-sector participation in Cuba.

During an interview with AP, Soberón directed his criticism at U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a leading architect of the Trump administration’s Cuba policy. “What are you afraid of?” the ambassador asked, arguing that if Washington believes the Cuban government is ineffective, there should be no need to repeatedly impose new sanctions to restrict the country’s economic activities.

The latest U.S. sanctions target nine state-owned mining, metal and construction companies, Cuba’s Ministry of Construction and officials associated with the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP).

Rubio accused the targeted individuals and organizations of supporting the Cuban government and promoting what he described as anti-American activities. Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez condemned the measures, saying they would further damage the economy and make it harder for the government to provide basic services.

The sanctions come as Cuba continues to face severe shortages of fuel, food and medicine, along with frequent electricity blackouts linked to its aging power infrastructure and limited fuel supplies.
