The latest collapse of the national electricity grid, the third in just 10 days, has left millions without reliable power amid sweltering summer temperatures, The Guardian reports.
Energy experts say Cuba’s aging thermoelectric plants are worn out and in urgent need of repairs, while government officials blame severe fuel shortages and limited access to replacement parts.
The Cuban government argues that intensified U.S. sanctions have worsened the crisis by restricting fuel supplies and discouraging foreign investment and trade. Washington has continued its pressure campaign against Havana, targeting key industries and companies doing business with the island. The shortages have disrupted imports of essential equipment and fuel, leaving authorities struggling to restore electricity and maintain basic public services.
The worsening conditions have fueled public frustration as frequent blackouts interrupt water supplies, spoil food and make daily life increasingly difficult.
Residents in several cities have staged noisy protests by banging pots and pans, demanding immediate action.
