By Zoila Palma:  Cuba is marking what would have been Fidel Castro’s 100th birthday on Thursday, with his legacy continuing to shape debate on an island facing a deepening economic and energy crisis.

While supporters credit the late revolutionary leader with advances in education, healthcare and culture, critics blame his government’s political system for restricting freedoms and contributing to the country’s long-term problems.

Castro’s centennial is being commemorated through the International Book Fair, art exhibitions, concerts and gatherings involving left-wing organizations from across the region. Posters of Castro remain visible in hospitals and on streets, alongside revolutionary slogans such as “Homeland or Death.”

Supporters continue to view him as a symbol of national dignity and social progress, AP reports.

The celebrations come as Cuba faces severe shortages and prolonged power outages amid an economic crisis worsened by U.S. sanctions and fuel restrictions.

The situation has affected access to fuel and medicine, transportation, tourism and industrial activity, while flight cancellations and reduced work and school hours have added to the difficulties faced by ordinary Cubans.

Castro ruled Cuba for nearly five decades after leading a guerrilla movement that overthrew dictator Fulgencio Batista in 1959. His government introduced agrarian reforms, launched a major literacy campaign and nationalized private businesses, bringing Cuba into a confrontation with the United States.

He became an influential figure in revolutionary and anti-colonial movements around the world, while also becoming a deeply controversial figure among Cubans who opposed one-party rule and restrictions on political freedoms.
