International News: Cuba hit by third countrywide blackout in March as power grid fails again

72

By Zoila Palma:  Cuba was plunged into a countrywide blackout on Saturday after the collapse of its power grid, marking the third such outage in March.

The Cuban Electric Union, which operates under the Ministry of Energy and Mines, initially reported a total loss of electricity across the island without providing a cause, AP reports.

Cuban officials later confirmed that the outage was triggered by an unexpected failure at a generating unit in the Nuevitas thermoelectric plant in Camagüey province.

Officials said the failure caused a cascading effect across the system, forcing the shutdown of other units.

Emergency measures were implemented, including the creation of “micro-islands” to supply electricity to essential services such as hospitals and water systems while restoration efforts continued.

The blackout highlights ongoing challenges within Cuba’s aging energy infrastructure, which has seen frequent breakdowns in recent years.

These issues are compounded by fuel shortages that have led to daily outages lasting up to 12 hours, further destabilizing the national grid.
