International News: Cuba denies U.S. Embassy diesel import as fuel crisis deepens

By Zoila Palma:  Cuba has refused a request by the United States Embassy in Havana to import diesel to power its generators, according to two U.S. officials familiar with the matter.

The denial comes as the Trump administration continues to enforce a fuel blockade on the island, further straining already limited energy resources.

According to AP, the decision remains under consideration alongside potential staffing reductions at the U.S. Embassy due to the diesel shortage.

Officials indicated that any reduction in personnel could prompt a reciprocal move affecting Cuba’s diplomatic presence in Washington. The development was first reported by The Washington Post, while U.S. and Cuban authorities have not publicly commented.

Cuba’s energy crisis has deepened in recent years following disruptions in oil supplies, particularly after shipments from Venezuela were halted.

Additional pressure has come from U.S. measures, including threats of tariffs on countries supplying oil to the island. As a result, Cuba has increasingly relied on domestic energy sources such as natural gas, solar power, and local oil production, which remain insufficient to meet national demand.

The shortages have had widespread effects across the country.

Residents face difficulties preserving food, hospitals have postponed surgeries, and educational institutions have scaled back operations due to power outages and transportation disruptions affecting daily life for the island’s population.
