By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Costa Rica’s Foreign Minister Arnoldo Andre announced on Tuesday that the country is ready to offer political asylum to Venezuelan opposition leaders María Corina Machado and Edmundo González, Reuters report.
Andre stated in a video message that Costa Rica is prepared to provide refuge to them and other politically persecuted individuals from Venezuela, particularly those currently seeking shelter in the Argentine embassy in Caracas.
The announcement follows reports that Venezuelan security forces have attempted to enter the Argentine embassy in Caracas, where Machado and five others have been staying since March. These attempts were reportedly unsuccessful.
The move comes amid heightened tensions in Venezuela after President Nicolás Maduro declared himself the winner of the recent presidential election, a result contested by the opposition and independent observers.
Costa Rica as well as other Latin American countries have rejected Maduro’s election results, labeling them as fraudulent, and has criticized the Venezuelan government’s actions, including the recent deployment of military and police patrols throughout the country.
