International News: Colombian President urges Migrants in U.S. to return home

By Zoila Palma: Colombian President Gustavo Petro has called on Colombians working without legal status in the U.S. to leave their jobs and return home, AP reports.

In a social media post, Petro stated, “Wealth is only produced by the working people,” encouraging migrants to help build Colombia’s social wealth.

He also offered loans to those willing to return and start businesses through government programs.

The comments follow a tense exchange with U.S. President Donald Trump over immigration, which nearly led to a trade dispute.

Despite the conflict, the two sides reached a truce after concerns about potential damage to Colombia’s economy, heavily reliant on U.S. exports.

From 2020 to 2024, Colombia accepted 475 U.S. deportation flights, with 124 of those occurring in 2024 alone.
