By Zoila Palma: Colombian President Gustavo Petro is struggling to access his salary and basic financial services after being placed under U.S. sanctions, his lawyer Daniel Kovalik told AFP on Thursday.
Petro, along with his wife, son, and interior minister, was recently added to the U.S. Treasury Department’s blacklist by President Donald Trump, accused of failing to adequately combat drug trafficking.
The sanctions have frozen the president’s assets in the United States and blocked his ability to do business with any U.S.-linked financial institutions.
“They’ve had their credit cards and bank accounts frozen. Even getting paid as public officials is now difficult,” Kovalik said, adding that a U.S.-affiliated fuel company in Spain even refused to refuel Petro’s presidential aircraft.
The Colombian leader’s salary has not been disclosed, but Kovalik said his client is exploring legal and diplomatic channels to challenge the measures.
“We are working on negotiations that could resolve the situation,” he said, though he cautioned that any resolution could be “a long and protracted process.”
Kovalik defended Petro’s record, saying the president has “fought the drug cartels his entire political career” and is being punished for his opposition to U.S. foreign policy.
