By Zoila Palma: A Colombian military transport aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff in the southern region of the country, with more than 100 personnel on board, authorities confirmed.
Vice President Francia Márquez Mina said the aircraft was carrying a large number of military personnel at the time of the crash, CNN reports.
The crash involved a C-130 Hercules plane and occurred near Puerto Leguízamo in the Putumayo department, close to the border with Peru.
Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the cause of the crash remains under investigation. According to General Carlos Silva, there were 114 passengers and 11 crew members on board.
Rescue efforts were launched immediately, with at least 48 individuals pulled from the wreckage.
Local indigenous ranger Nicolas Ordoñez, who participated in the search operations, said several survivors were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
President Gustavo Petro expressed condolences to the families of those affected and said the incident “should never have happened,” citing concerns about the lack of modernization within the armed forces.
