International News: Colombia quake losses estimated at $9.6 billion

By Zoila Palma:  Colombia’s President Abelardo De La Espriella has estimated that the economic losses from last week’s powerful earthquake could reach 30 trillion pesos, or approximately $9.6 billion.

The preliminary assessment includes damage to buildings and infrastructure across affected areas, Reuters report.

De La Espriella said around 24.5 trillion pesos in losses were linked to buildings, while another 5.5 trillion pesos involved infrastructure. “Just imagine the scale of the disaster,” the president said.

The magnitude 7.4 earthquake caused widespread damage across western Colombia, including in the major cities of Cali and Pereira.

The disaster has reportedly killed 280 people, injured more than 4,000 and left another 143 people missing.

The earthquake represents the first major crisis facing De La Espriella, who took office only days before the disaster.
