By Zoila Palma: Colombia’s Foreign Ministry has accused the United States of violating international law after Washington revoked the visa of President Gustavo Petro, Yahoo reports.
The move followed Petro’s participation in a pro-Palestinian rally in New York during the U.N. General Assembly, where he urged U.S. troops not to follow orders he deemed harmful to humanity.
Colombia called the visa revocation a misuse of a Trump-era resolution as a “diplomatic weapon,” saying it contravenes the United Nations Charter’s guarantees for freedom of opinion and expression.
The U.S. State Department said Petro’s actions were “reckless and incendiary,” referencing a video in which the Colombian president called for nations to build an army to defend Palestinians and urged U.S. troops not to “point their rifles against humanity.”
Petro, returning to Colombia, criticized the revocation as a violation of international law and suggested relocating the U.N. headquarters to a neutral country, such as Qatar, to prevent political influence over the organization.
Petro also criticized the Trump administration’s 2025 “decertification” of Colombia in the fight against drug trafficking, calling it political interference and linking it to his stances on Gaza and environmental issues.
