By Zoila Palma: Today, clashes broke out between protesters and police in several French cities as approximately 320,000 people took to the streets to demonstrate against the rising cost of living and deteriorating conditions in schools.
The French Interior Ministry reported that about 70,000 people participated in demonstrations in Paris alone, with rallies also held in cities including Lyon, Marseille, Rennes and Toulouse, Yahoo reports.
Although demonstrations began largely peacefully, tensions escalated later in the afternoon, prompting police to use tear gas in Paris and Lyon. Footage from the capital showed fireworks and incendiary devices being thrown toward officers in riot gear, while burning objects were reported on streets in Marseille. In Rennes, the local prefecture reported that individuals had thrown projectiles at police officers.
The demonstrations were organized by trade unions, school and student organizations, and the Yellow Vest movement, which gained prominence in 2018.
Young people have been protesting for weeks over inadequate school staffing and equipment, while other groups have joined since mid-October to express frustration over the rising cost of living.
French authorities deployed approximately 70,000 police officers and security personnel nationwide, with additional security measures introduced to prevent looting and violence.
