By Zoila Palma: CIA Director John Ratcliffe met with Venezuela’s Interim President Delcy Rodríguez in Caracas on Thursday for a two-hour discussion, which a U.S. official said was conducted “at President Trump’s direction.”
The meeting, described as “historic,” came nearly two weeks after U.S. forces seized former President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, who are now detained in New York facing drug trafficking and other charges.
Ratcliffe’s visit marked the first time a U.S. cabinet-level official traveled to Venezuela, BBC reports.
The talks focused on building trust and communication between the two countries, as well as exploring potential economic collaboration.
The U.S. official emphasized that “Venezuela can no longer be a safe haven for America’s adversaries.”
The meeting coincided with Rodríguez’s first state of the union address as interim president, during which she outlined reforms to Venezuela’s oil industry aimed at attracting foreign investment and moving away from Maduro-era policies.
Rodríguez stressed her willingness to engage diplomatically with the U.S., asserting that Venezuela must defend its sovereignty, independence, and dignity.
