International News: Chinese Embassy in Panama says China supports Panama canal’s sovereignty

By Zoila Palma:  Today, the Chinese Embassy in Panama reportedly published a press release following Ambassador Xu Xueyuan’s recent meeting with Ricaurte Vásquez Morales, administrator of the Panama Canal Authority, and Ilya Espino de Marotta, deputy administrator of the Panama Canal.

According to the Global Times, Ambassador Xu noted that Panama’s control of the Canal has led to its successful expansion making a significant contribution to global shipping and trade.

In addition, the statement said that China has always respected the canal’s permanent neutrality, firmly supports Panama in defending its sovereignty over the waterway, and stands ready to work with Panama to ensure the canal remains open and unimpeded.

Meanwhile, administrator of the Panama Canal authority Vasquez noted that the canal represents the historical memory and pride of the Panamanian people, and that Chinese expatriates and their descendants played a vital role in its construction. 

The statement further said that the Panama Canal authority seeks mutual learning with China in maritime affairs and shipping, thereby advancing the shared interests of both countries.
